Cross-cultural Connections: Increasing Students’ Inclusion and Belonging with Intercultural Competency

Presentation Description: To increase international students’ inclusion, belonging and wellbeing at our school, as well as improve our US students’ intercultural competency, we created a “Cross-cultural Connections Affinity Group” for international and US domestic first-year students. This group formed cohesive bonds through programs, activities and a required, credit-bearing course that fostered their cross-cultural communication and reflection skills. In our session, we will describe how we created the pilot program and the results. Come and share with us how your institution works on these goals.

Learning Objectives:

  • During our presentation, participants will discover ways to promote reciprocal learning on campus that can boost US students’ intercultural competency and international students’ sense of inclusion and belonging.
  • During our presentation, participants will gain and share an understanding of the well-being needs of international and domestic students in the post-pandemic college environment.
  • Participants will be able to describe and evaluate how the services and curriculum at their institution are coordinated to support US students’ intercultural competency and international students’ inclusion and belonging.
