Enhancing Openness to Diversity: Measuring the Impact of Study Abroad

This session explores how the Global Engagement Survey (GES) data was used to analyze changes in student openness to diversity following study abroad at Northeastern University. Through the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data, we identified key factors that contribute to student growth in openness to diversity and areas where students face challenges. Attendees will learn how to implement this kind of study in their own global experience programs to track and improve student growth.

  • Learn how quantitative and qualitative data can be used to identify barriers that impede student openness to diversity, or other components of global learning, within study abroad programs.
  • Gain insight into the long-term benefits of student openness to diversity and how gaps in the literature can be addressed through comprehensive assessment practices.
  • Take away practical strategies for integrating study findings into their own study abroad programs to foster greater openness to diversity among students.
