“It’s Not That Bad”: Business Casual Racism in International Education

Presentation Description: The Model Minority Myth perpetuates systemic racism in the United States by categorizing Asians and Asian Americans as monolithic, rule abiding, and hard working, rendering them invisible in critical dialogue about marginalized racial communities. This session examines the history of the Model Minority Myth, its presence in International Education, and how it disenfranchises Asian and Asian American professionals and students. Presenters will explore dynamics, share lived experiences, and provide actionable insights for educators and administrators.

Learning Objectives:

  • As a result of attending this session, participants will be able to define the Model Minority Myth.
  • During this session, participants will be able to identify the presence of the Model Minority Myth in International Education.
  • After this session, participants will be able to reflect on how they potentially perpetuate the Model Minority Myth in their own practices.
